On Wednesday, July 27 a man from Blount County man was sentenced to 30 years in jail in relation with a crash that killed a young woman from Remlap.
The accident happened on June 1, 2014 when 25 year old Tyler Len Reynolds, was driving a vehicle in Oneonta which left the roadway and hit several trees. The vehicle then rolled several times resulting in the death of his passenger, 20 year old Melissa Gilbert.
Prosecutors argued that Reynolds recklessly engaged in conduct which manifested extreme indifference to human life and created a grave risk of death to Gilbert. According to troopers, Reynolds was driving at around 100 miles an hour at the time of the crash and another passenger, Philip Pearson said that just before the crash happened, he screamed at Reynolds to slow down. Following the crash, Reynolds refused to call 911 and left the scene, going home for a shower and then went to bed without reporting the accident.
Reynolds was convicted to 30 years for reckless murder and was also was given a 10 year sentence for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries without reporting the wreck.
