On Monday morning, June 13 a construction worker was killed in a crane accident.
According to Walker County sheriff’s deputies, the accident happened shortly after 8 a.m. in Walker County near Gorgas Steam Plant, on a construction site in the 1300 block of Highway 269 in Parrish.
The crane was working from a terrace on a sloping job site and looks as though it was preparing to tandem lift some concrete bridge beams, but the boom went over the back of the crane causing it to overturn. The operator who was 62 year old Fred “Boone” Crayton of Birmingham, sensing the crane start to go jumped out of the cab, but the crane then landed on him.
The deputies called the Walker County coroner’s office which arrived at the scene and declared the victim deceased.
At this stage it is not known why the crane toppled over and the accident remains under investigation.
