A jury in west Alabama jury has awarded $5.5 million in a wrongful death claim to relatives of a man who died when a crane toppled over. This is one of the largest verdicts in west Alabama in around 10 years.
Jurors in Hale County returned the verdict on Tuesday, May 17, in the case of the death of 47 year old Michael Singley of Linden who was killed when the crane he was operating fell over in July 2012. He was working for West Alabama Mechanical in Moundville and at the time of the accident was working with the crane at Southern Ionics in Holt. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed by his family which claimed that the company which inspected the crane, Southeastern Crane Inspections LLC did not reveal that the crane had serious problems to West Alabama Mechanical. The crane toppled over as a stabilizing safety feature failed.
Previously several other companies had settled claims in connection with the accident apart from Southeastern Crane.
